The Mystery of Synchronicity: When Life Sends a Signal
Sometimes Spirit answers with signs in the clouds, dreams in the night. And sometimes, it calls you… from the bottom of a wheelie bin. This is our recent true story of a missing phone, a message from the Universe and how we sometimes lose and find ourselves in the most unexpected ways.
What if the Universe is more connected than we think? What if two seemingly unrelated events, a thought and a phone call, a dream and a stranger’s words, or even a lost object and a sudden urge to stop, aren’t just coincidences, but part of something deeper? This is the realm of synchronicity, a term first coined by Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist who dared to explore the bridge between the unconscious, the archetypal and the cosmic.
What is Synchronicity?
Synchronicity is the experience of two or more events that are linked in a meaningful way, even though they have no direct causal connection. This is known as acausal synchronicity because there is no obvious connection between the events that take place.
It’s not just a coincidence; it’s a moment that feels significant, as if life itself is aligning to deliver a message. These unlikely occurrences of synchronicity often happen when we least expect them: thinking of someone just before they call, stumbling upon the exact information we needed, or being in the right place at the perfect particular time.
Deeply Connected Beyond Time and Space
What makes synchronicity so fascinating is that it appears to operate outside of ordinary logic. While cause and effect explain most things in life, synchronistic events feel acausal, not caused by one another, yet deeply connected by their timing, symbolism or emotional impact. These events often feel like signs, nudges or affirmations from something greater than ourselves, whether you call it Spirit, the Universe, or pure energy.
Synchronicity invites us to interpret life in a more meaningful way, tuning into the subtle frequency of patterns and connections that might otherwise go unnoticed. It reminds us that everything is interconnected, that there’s a hidden order or rhythm beneath life’s surface. And often, the more open and present we are, the more we begin to notice how these simultaneous events appear; spontaneous, transformative and perfectly timed.
Carl Jung: The Origins of Meaningful Coincidence
Jung in the 1920s, alongside physicist Wolfgang Pauli, introduced the idea of meaningful coincidence: events that are acausal (not linked by cause and effect) yet mysteriously connected by meaning. These simultaneous events, point to a hidden interconnectedness between the psyche and the material world. Seemingly disconnected overlapping and meaningful events are part of a collective unconscious. Here time, space and causality intertwine in often unexpected ways. If you do happen to have good intuition or psychic ability, then you are already connected to that unconscious collective field so these type of events may not be unexpected.

And the Science?
Jung’s concept of synchronicity has fascinated both scientific minds and spiritual seekers. Such great thinkers like quantum theorists Bohr and Einstein to modern contemporaries like Rupert Sheldrake, explore morphic resonance and the nature of reality. While not directly supporting Jung’s theory, thinkers like Bohr and Sheldrake explored themes associated to the idea of underlying interconnectedness.
While science may still debate its probability and statistical likelihood, many of us have lived through moments that feel too timely, too profound, too aligned to be random. This is not just theory, it’s lived experience. And when we open ourselves to it, synchronicity may offer not only a glimpse into the mysteries of the cosmos, but also a mirror into ourselves.
Now, let’s explore one such moment, where loss, timing and trust came together in the most unexpected of places. This is a story not just about a lost phone, but a deeper calling. A synchronistic occurrence that began with a quiet prayer… and ended with a head in a bin.
It’s Gone…Two Days Missing
My husband’s phone had been missing for two days. We searched the house, the cars, the garden – we even used Google’s tracking tools and apps. The map showed the phone was somewhere in the house, but when we rang it, no sound. It was like it had vanished into thin air.
That second night, I asked Spirit for help. Just a quiet prayer: “Please show us where it is.” No expectations, no drama – just trust.
The Day Everything Aligned
The next day, my husband finally dealt with an old lounge that had been outside in the rain for two weeks. It had been the dogs’ bed – soaked, sagging and long past its use. For some reason, that particular day he cut it up and took it to the tip, even though I had been asking for a while for it to be removed from the driveway! A release. A clearing of the old.
On the way home, as he drove past our mailbox at the bottom of the mountain, something nudged him to stop. As he stood there, 400 metres from the house, his car’s Bluetooth suddenly connected. The phone had paired with the car, it still had live battery… ‘how amazement!’ But he didn’t have the phone with him. That meant it was nearby.
At that exact moment, our neighbour happened to call. The call came through the car speakers. And suddenly, it all clicked. He began to search the garden near the mailbox. Nothing. Then he remembered the rubbish bin he’d put out for collection that morning.
And there it was – at the bottom of the bin, under two full bags of garbage. It had fallen from his top pocket when he filled the bin two days earlier. That night it would have been gone forever, if my husband hadn’t stopped. He didn’t hear it ringing – not until he open the lid and literally put his head inside the bin. Thankfully, the rubbish was bagged and the phone was unharmed.

The Hidden Message
Sure, it’s a great story and a big sense of relief. Think about it, if my husband had been a minute earlier or later, when that call came through, he would not have been near the wheelie bin. The garbage truck would have picked up the bin tonight and all would’ve been lost. However, beneath the worry and timing is a much deeper truth.
In a very Jungian way, your phone represents more than a device. It holds:
Your contacts – his connections
Messages – your voice
Your data, ID, photos – your very identity
It’s a digital mirror of self. And for those two days, that part of himself was lost. On the drive home from the tip, he was even thinking of giving up, cancelling the SIM card, switching to an old phone. He was ready to replace that part of himself.
But Spirit had other plans. The call came. The signal returned. And just before the bin was emptied for good, the lost was found.
What Spirit Might Be Saying
This whole experience felt guided. The timing. The signal. The call. The bin. Even the old lounge, which could’ve been taken away earlier, was once a place of comfort, but is now discarded.
Maybe it’s no coincidence that:
He lost the phone from his top pocket, near his heart
It was buried in refuse; what we discard, ignore, or “throw away.”
It was found after he let go of the old (the lounge) and just before he replaced the SIM (his connection to identity).
It revealed itself only when he stopped, listened and opened the bin.
We were open to synchronicity in our lives.
When Signs Come Softly
Not every experience of synchronicity comes with flashing lights or dramatic timing. Sometimes, the signs arrive softly through a quiet impulse, an inner knowing, or two seemingly related events that happen at just the right moment. These gentle nudges invite us to pause, to listen, and to sense a deeper synchrony at play, one that flows beyond ordinary cause and effect.
In the nature of reality, we often assume things must be proven scientifically, measured by probability, or explained through statistical models. But the concept of synchronicity challenges that. It shows us that events are linked not by logic alone, but by meaning, emotional resonance, symbolic timing, or archetypal patterns that speak directly to the psyche.
Just like particles in quantum theory can be connected across space and time, synchronistic moments remind us that everything is connected. Like a frequency always broadcasting beneath the surface, they appear when we tune in, when we trust our intuition over our intellect and allow the moment to unfold. While you can try to analyze or differentiate them through an analytic lens, their real gift is in how they make us feel: guided, affirmed, seen. In a world full of noise, these soft signals are sacred.

Finding Ourselves in the Unexpected
We often expect clarity to arrive through logic, reason, or calculated steps. But in truth, the most transformative realizations often emerge in the ordinary: a missed call, a discarded item, a strange pause that suddenly makes sense. That’s the magic of coincidence and synchronicity. They bridge the outer world with the inner one, asking us to explore the deeper meaning behind what first appears coincidental.
The idea of synchronicity, which Carl Jung and physicist Wolfgang Pauli explored in 1928, was born from a desire to understand the interconnectedness between mind and matter. Drawing from cosmology, analytical psychology and even quantum parallels, Jung believed that when two events happen in a meaningful way without direct causation, they may arise from a shared archetype, a symbol rooted in the collective unconscious. These events aren’t madness or psychosis, though some tried to label them that way. They’re glimpses into a transcendent order of things. As Rupert Sheldrake, Bohr, and others have theorised, life may contain an underlying connectivity. It’s one that links us not just biologically, but energetically.
But It’s Not Scientific!
And while the world may still debate its scientific standing, many of us know the sense of connection that comes with moments too profound to ignore. These are the moments that let us know we’re not alone. That there is a sync, a pulse, a rhythm; one we can’t always explain, but one that we feel profoundly. So if you’ve ever wondered if something more was at play, trust that wonder. Because synchronicity may be the language Spirit uses when words fall short, not to control us, but to remind us that the journey is not random. There is order. There is meaning. And more often than not, what appears lost is just waiting for the perfect particular time to return, not just to our lives, but to our awareness.
It’s possible to live in this field of connection…as you pay attention it will increasingly happen. You’ll be in ‘flow’ with the Universe, seeking to help you at every turn.
Everyday Examples of Synchronicity
Thinking of someone, and they suddenly call or text.
A mental connection becomes a real-world interaction, as if your thoughts were received.
Seeing repeating numbers (like 11:11 or 222) during emotional moments
Often interpreted as signs or affirmations from the Universe or your higher self.
Hearing a song with lyrics that perfectly mirror your current situation
Music that seems to deliver an exact message when you need it most.
Meeting someone who shares a key detail or answer you were just pondering.
A “chance” encounter that offers clarity, direction, or unexpected guidance.
Finding a book, article or quote that speaks to something you’ve been struggling with
As if wisdom found you, right when you needed insight.
Missing a train or event, and discovering it led to something better
A real ‘sliding doors’ moment! What seemed like bad luck becomes a meaningful redirection.

A Reflection for Us All
Sometimes we lose ourselves in stress, distraction, grief or busyness. We bury parts of who we are under emotional rubbish and forget they’re still alive, still calling out. But Spirit doesn’t forget. Even when we’re ready to move on, something might call us back to recover what we thought was lost. And yes, sometimes that recovery comes with your head in a bin.
But hey, that’s life. And that’s Spirit. Beautifully human. Unexpectedly divine. So here’s a question: What part of yourself have you thrown away – that’s still waiting to be found?
A Final Message
If this story resonated with you, I invite you to pause and reflect on the subtle threads weaving through your own life. Synchronicity isn’t something reserved for the mystical few; it’s part of the human experience. These synchronistic events often arrive without warning, nudging us to pay attention, to look closer and to trust the timing of things we can’t fully explain.
In sharing this story, I hope it helps you remember that everything is connected, even the moments that feel messy, lost or too late. There’s a frequency to life that becomes clearer when we slow down, stay open, and allow ourselves to be surprised. Sometimes it’s in the stillness. Sometimes, it’s in the bin!
Let this be a gentle reminder that the Universe is always in conversation with you, through emotion, intuition and symbols. Spontaneous moments that may seem small but carry meaningful weight. Your journey is not random. There is connectivity, purpose and often, a deeper transformative thread running beneath the surface.
Keep your heart open. Life speaks in mysterious ways, and when we learn to interpret it meaningfully, we begin to see how nothing is ever truly lost.
— With love and alignment,
Rose
