Amerexit: Is America the Next Soviet Union? A 2025 Look at Collapse, Power and the Superpower of a Teenage Existential Crisis

Beginning of the end

The Beginning of the End?

In 2025, it honestly feels like we’re watching the slow unravelling of America’s global dominance. Maybe it sounds a bit dramatic to say the U.S. is collapsing, but the cracks are pretty hard to miss. I had a dream a few months ago and Amerexit is the term my subconscious has coined in that dream.

Once the great superpower that stepped up after the Second World War, the country now looks like it’s coming apart at the seams from the inside. Now personality over policy has become a veritable circus of wannabes and the old glue – things like the rule of law, fair institutions and a shared sense of civic duty is wearing thin. With President Donald Trump back in the White House for a second go, many can’t help but draw a worrying comparison – the Soviet Union – right before it fell apart.

And that’s not just being over the top. The Soviet collapse in the early 1990s didn’t happen in one big dramatic moment – it was death by a thousand cuts. Confidence, unity and engagement all drained away. Mikhail Gorbachev’s unilateral withdrawals from Eastern Europe were a sign the Soviet project had lost its grip. Today, America feels like it’s meandering down the same road. Tariffs, walking away from international agreements and throwing shade on its own democratic processes – it’s a kind of retreat that echoes that same sense of power slipping away. The real question isn’t whether the U.S. is changing, but whether we’re watching a once-mighty empire of modern civilisation transform into a pile of fragile fragments.

And if you look at the sky right now, you’ll see the planets echoing these same tensions, just as they did before Brexit.

Economic Retreat and Tariff Traps

One of the biggest red flags for this so-called Amerexit is the economy. Tariffs were sold during Trump’s first term as proof of American resilience, but in practice they’ve done more harm than good. Prices go up, supply chains get tangled, and trade wars break out – hurting local producers just as much as overseas partners. It’s a bit like what happened before the Soviet Union’s collapse: economic and social problems were swept under the rug until they hit breaking point. By pushing “America First,” Trump didn’t deliver strength – he delivered uncertainty which is causing social problems to suddenly explode.

This economic retreat feeds straight into the wider crisis of meaning that has allowed chronic issues to pile up without resolution. But Spirit always has an inclination to integrate and become whole. Breaking things apart is only the first stage – eventually, they have to be rejoined and integrated again, not just politically or economically, but also psychologically, physically and spiritually. This is the work of many generations in fact. So we are all unlikely to see a return to full stability in our lifetimes.

Independence or Isolation?

Politicians love to talk about independence, but the reality is the global economy doesn’t work in silos. Cutting ties leads to fragmentation, not unity – just as Soviet citizens eventually found it impossible to believe the official line when it strayed too far from lived reality.

Now, investors are eyeing Trump’s second term nervously, wary of more erratic decisions that could drag the U.S. into a self-inflicted recession. Think Brexit, but on steroids. Because here, the U.S. isn’t just leaving a union – it’s abandoning its own myth as the superpower the rest of the world could count on.

Geopolitical Isolation: The Empire Pulls Back (An Indication
of the Collapse of the US's Superpower)

the statue of liberty

America’s retreat from global engagement isn’t just about diplomacy – it’s an ideological withdrawal. Since the time of George Washington, the U.S. has swung between leading on the world stage and pulling back into nationalism. But this time, it doesn’t feel like careful neutrality – it feels like abdication. By stepping back from NATO, the Paris Agreement and post-war alliances like the European Union, Washington DC is sending a blunt message: it no longer wants the responsibility of being the world’s stabiliser.  The current retreat from its engagements around the world constitutes a surrender of power comparable in living memory only to Mikhail Gorbachev, when his pullout from Eastern Europe signalled the Soviet Union’s collapse.

The parallels are striking. America’s political system has become so polarised that foreign policy now swings wildly with every election. It’s like living on the end of a swinging pendulum! A range of policies and actions under Trump -abandoning treaties, cutting aid and turning inward – mirror that same chaotic retraction of influence. America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan was a symbolic echo of Gorbachev’s retreat. Now with a second Trump administration, there’s real concern that impulsive decisions could deepen fractures across the globe. Allies feel deserted, adversaries emboldened. The U.S., once the world’s anchor, is now drifting aimlessly and no longer leading with ideals.

A Crisis of Meaning and the Fragile Constitution

One of the biggest red flags for Amerexit is the economy. Tariffs were framed as proof of American resilience, but in practice, they’ve done more harm than good. Prices go up, supply chains get tangled and trade wars break out – hurting local producers just as much as overseas partners. It’s a bit like what happened before the Soviet Union’s collapse: economic and social problems were ignored until they hit breaking point. By pushing “America First,” Trump delivered uncertainty rather than strength.

At the heart of this a crisis of meaning allowed chronic political, economic and social problems to pile up until they felt deeply threatening. The Constitution – almost mythological in its status and the sacred centre of America’s political system, was meant to hold the nation together. But the more its protections are stretched or manipulated, the less public faith in the system.

America now depends on mythological thinking instead of shared reality, science, and solid education and that’s creating chaos. Social problems aren’t creeping up – they’re exploding. Don’t get me wrong – I love the mystical, the magical, the spiritual (after all, I’m a psychic astrologer!). But as mature humans, we need to hold both worlds: to let spirituality guide our hearts while keeping our feet firmly planted in practical reality. Give to God what is God’s and give to Caesar what is Caesar’s. When one dominates the other, society fractures – and everyone suffers.

We’re currently watching the old mini-series The Winds of War with Robert Mitchum and this really puts the current American moment into perspective. The slow build-up of tension, the personal dramas set against global crises – it’s eerily familiar. (Full disclosure: Ali MacGraw’s on-again, off-again antics with a young handsome Jan-Michael Vincent are simply annoying. My husband can’t stand her – but the point is the unfolding chaos around them).

Social Fragmentation and Rising Nationalism

the American flag

Alongside political erosion, America is experiencing serious social fragmentation – a loss of shared purpose that has people retreating into echo chambers. Like Soviet citizens in the late ’80s, Americans today struggle to agree on even basic facts. The ideological centre has given way to tribalism, with inequality, misinformation and systemic injustice feeding distrust at every level. This isn’t random chaos – it’s the natural outcome of years of attacking institutions and ignoring the root causes of division. At the heart of it? Inequality – between the sexes, religions and genders, just to name a few. Rising nationalist rhetoric pushes exclusion and protectionism over collaboration and innovation. What was once a melting pot of democratic energy now feels like a boiling cauldron of resentment.

Amerexit isn’t just an economic or diplomatic story – it’s spiritual. Think of it like a teenager leaving home: freedom is thrilling, but without guidance, the journey can quickly become dangerous. Trump’s policies, reflected in a second term, make it clear the U.S. is more interested in dominance or retreat than genuine collaboration. The country used to pride itself on resilience, but now it flirts with self-sabotage. Without real cross-cultural exchange and shared civic stories, social innovation grinds to a halt. The erosion of engagement with the world mirrors how social cohesion is fraying at home, a pattern that feels eerily like the final days of the Soviet Union.

Mirrors, Chickens and the Winds of Change

Whilst I’m writing this article, a big mirror in the chicken run broke in the rain and wind – it shattered everywhere. We put the mirror there so the chickasaurs could reflect on themselves! The weather, the chaos, the fractured reflection across a dozen shards – it felt like a metaphor made flesh. Society, like that mirror, shows us distorted images when its pieces aren’t held together. The winds of change are blowing hard, and unless the fragments of America – its institutions, its people, its values – are acknowledged and integrated, it risks sliding into self-destruction. Even Gorky Park couldn’t hide the truth: when reflection is fractured, so too is reality.

Astrology, Archetypes and the Road Ahead

Interestingly, astrology offers a symbolic lens for understanding the U.S.’s current journey. The planetary alignments in April this year echo those of 2015–2016, when Brexit began reshaping the European Union. In both periods, the Uranus–Saturn tension signals rebellion clashing with order, while Pluto’s influence suggests a deep transformation of power structures. These cosmic patterns suggest that society is once again caught between old systems and the call for radical change. The echoes are not just metaphorical – they speak to a shared partisan vibration that underpins social behaviour, rebellion and restructuring.

This isn’t to say the stars determine our future, but they mirror the struggles we collectively face. Whether viewed through history or astrology, America in 2025 resembles an empire in crisis of meaning. Like a teenager desperate to carve out an identity, the U.S. is undergoing painful growth, but may also make reckless choices along the way. The comparison to Mikhail Gorbachev’s era becomes more than symbolism. It becomes a warning. If the U.S. continues down this path, ignoring its inclusive institutions, embracing short-term populism and dismissing its role in the world, it may soon find itself confronting a question once unimaginable: Has the American empire collapsed from within?

Saturn in Scorpio

Saturn was in Scorpio, a placement that emphasises intense transformation, power struggles and deep, often hidden issues surfacing from beneath the surface.

Uranus in Aries

Uranus in Aries brought impulsive, rebellious and disruptive energy, symbolizing rapid and radical shifts that break away from tradition.

Jupiter in Libra

Jupiter’s placement in Libra highlighted balance, justice and partnerships, indicating underlying themes in the Brexit debate, such as fairness, sovereignty and cooperation.

Neptune in Pisces and Pluto in Capricorn

These slow-moving outer planets set a broader context: Neptune dissolved boundaries and blurred realities, while Pluto pushed for deep, structural transformations in institutions and systems.

During this period, the tense dynamic between Saturn in Scorpio (representing entrenched structures) and Uranus in Aries (representing revolutionary change) reflected the collective unrest that culminated in the Brexit vote – an eruption of long-suppressed tension.

In 2025:

Saturn in Pisces

Now in Pisces, Saturn takes on a more fluid, empathetic tone. Structure still matters, but it’s expressed with more emotional sensitivity and openness to adaptation.

Uranus in Taurus

Uranus has moved into Taurus, shifting its disruptive force toward material values, economic systems and environmental priorities. Change now targets what we hold as stable or secure.

Jupiter in Gemini (or nearby air sign)

Jupiter now emphasises intellectual curiosity, communication and adaptability. The collective focus shifts from harmonious relationships to the open exchange of ideas and information.

Neptune in Aries and Pluto in Aquarius

This year, Neptune in Aries stirs idealism, illusion and a desire for radical new beginnings, often blurring the line between visionary ambition and wishful thinking. At the same time, Pluto in Aquarius is pushing deep, systemic transformations -power structures, technology and collective ideals are being shaken and reformed. Together, these slow-moving forces suggest a society in flux, where old institutions crumble under pressure and new frameworks struggle to take shape. This is a cosmic reflection of America’s own fractured reality right now.

Comparing the Two Eras

Saturn–Uranus Dynamic

In 2015, Saturn in Scorpio and Uranus in Aries clashed dramatically, reflecting an intense battle between tradition and upheaval.

In 2025, Saturn in Pisces and Uranus in Taurus form a quincunx (150° angle), indicating less confrontation and more awkward adjustment. It’s a slower, more subtle integration of new values into old systems.

Jupiter’s Focus

In 2015, Jupiter in Libra was centred on fairness, diplomacy, and balance in relationships and alliances.

In 2025, Jupiter in Gemini turns that focus toward intellectual engagement and flexibility, encouraging dialogue and different perspectives over confrontation.

Final Thoughts: Can the Centre Hold?

US' symbolic building (1)

The collapse of the Soviet Union wasn’t a sudden implosion – it was the result of decades of denial, internal contradiction and a refusal to evolve. Today, America faces a similar reckoning. The promise of the nation – America’s master signifier – still lies in its Constitution and the dream of a pluralistic democracy. But the more it drifts toward nationalism, authoritarian leadership and isolation, the more it risks becoming a shadow of the empire it once was.

Amerexit may not be a literal withdrawal, like Britain from the EU, but it does symbolise something deeper: a retreat from engagement, a surrender of power and an abandonment of the very ideals that once made America a beacon. Whether this is a teenage phase or the beginning of the end depends on how the country responds. Will it reclaim its role as a mature resilient leader – or will it, like Gorbachev’s USSR, become a cautionary tale of how superpowers fall? Only time will tell but the astrology suggests things will never be the same again.
